Sometime around the mid-1990’s, my boss at the engineering consultancy where I worked came to me and said: “We’re going to bid on a value engineering assignment and we want you to run it”.
I looked at my engineering ring and thought “isn’t that what we’re always supposed to do?!”
Undaunted and armed only with a tattered text from the 80s, I set out to learn everything I could about VE.
I devoured that book like it was the latest bestseller.
It changed the way I worked and looked at everything. There’s always more than one way to do something. And there’s always more than one way to do it better.
What attracted me was the research and discovery of alternative ways to achieve a desired result. Ways that increase the value of the outcome.
It became a hobby in every project I worked on. The hobby became more of a passion and a driving force in my work. I decided to make it my business, first in a partnership, then on my own in a venture that became NCE.
My passion for value engineering has fueled my work ever since.
